The Future of Virtual Tours?
A bit of fun today. This visually stunning short film tells the story of a man who builds a virtual world for the woman he loves using a tool that looks to be a mashup of Google Sketchup and the interface seen in Minority Report (also see Navigating a Virtual World). But with a little imagination it could easily be a fantastic vision of the future of a real “virtual” property tour.
http://www.vimeo.com/3365942The 8.5 minute film took over 2 years of post-production to render all the visual effects.

I know it is none of my business, but I was wondering how much it cost you to make that video?
Were those real actors or people on your staff?
They were very good.

If this is the quality I need to get my Virtual tours to be…I’m in big trouble.

Wow, that is an amazing video! Something like this (although far less spectacular!) can be done in Second Life or OpenLifeGrid. You could rebuild a listing and let people actually walk through it. It would be great for luxury homes, new construction, or planned communities. The drawback is they require a pretty graphics intensive viewer download, and there’s a learning curve to both of them. It wouldn’t be easy, but it could be done!

Really cool video – awesome job.
It raised some interesting philosophical questions within me – great video and provokes some great thought.

Brilliant thanks for sharing it Joel.
Like you say Warren, Second Life & OpenLifeGrid could become the not too distant future marketplace for the project marketing world.

Hello, We are bringing “Virtual Realty” to Real Estate. We have built a collaboration tool for real estate agents to be able to communicate with buyers using a 3D landscape, realistic terrain, MLS search and neighborhood info such as home locations parcel boundaries, schools etc. If you get a chance visit our website to check it out. We can upload all kinds of information to the landscape from 3D models to video on terrain and even avatars. Our website has videos that show it in use and a live demo to check out the technology.

I guess if we start filming now, the recession might have gone by the time it’s finished and there might be enough profit in my house to pay for it!
