Scoble sells his house – where was Redfin?
Influential tech blogger (and ex-Microsoft employee) recently sold his house in Seattle as part of his move to the Bay area. Looks like he did pretty well out of the deal. His has some very nice things to say about Zillow and, interestingly, Realtors in general.
Says the Scobleizer:
I’ve learned to listen to the professionals, though, and it all worked out.
I’m a little surprised that being the tech-head that he is, he didn’t choose to buy/list with geek favorite Redfin. Seems to me he would have been the perfect customer.
UPDATE: Scoble replies to this post saying he didn’t know about Redfin. That’s not a good sign for their marketing efforts, IMO.

I didn’t even know about it. But, I had a personal relationship with Stan from when he got us a house three years ago. On my next trip up here, though, I’d love to interview you guys.

Robert – I was wondering myself why you didn’t use our service. It seems like just yesterday that we were all sharing a beer and talking about it at Techcrunch! (http://blog.redfin.com/blog/redfin/2006/06/geeks_gone_wild_1.html) I’m glad you were able to get above your asking price and I also commend your agent for the good work he did.
Had you used Redfin for either the sale of your house in Washington, or your purchase in California, I think that you would have found it incredibly easy to search for past sales in your neighborhood to come up with good comps and accurately price your home. Our Redfin Direct agents would have further helped you get it just right. In California, we would have worked like crazy to get you the home you wanted at the price you wanted to pay.
Best of luck down in California! We’ll certainly miss you up here in Seattle!

I’m really not sure Redfin is the best deal for someone like Robert Scoble as he seems to be a pretty busy guy. A Redfin buyer or seller who actually benefits from their model is someone who will need to spend some time really understanding the market and becoming an expert. I’ve heard (no sources listed here) that a fair number of successful Redfin purchasers bid significantly higher than the value of the home, winning them the house they want, but at a significantly higher cost than 2% of the value of the home. This is heresay, but I’d love to see someone run Redfin’s sale price umbers against Zillow’s estimates.
No offense to Redfin here. It is the PERFECT model for certain people. And, many of those people could get at least as much service from a full-service agent who rebates some of their commission.
