Real Estate Agents Boycott Discount Brokers?

Redfin better watch out…I found this interesting release over the news wire this afternoon and they’re singled out. Progressive Homesellers is offering a new approach to dealing with a perceived ‘boycott of discount brokers’.

Real Estate Agents Boycott Discount Brokers

So how does it work?

Progressive Homesellers’ customers list their homes for a flat fee of $3,995 with an experienced Realtor at a brand-name brokerage, such as Coldwell Banker, Prudential, RE/MAX or Century 21.

I’m not sure how the Realtor’s brokers will feel about them participating in this program. Here’s another choice quote:

Our service delivers the best of both worlds. It’s like flying first class for the price of coach.

Sounds a little sketchy to me.

Wouldn’t you know it, this company is also based in Seattle. It should be interesting to see how this company does in the marketplace.

This was the same company that the Washington State Department of Licensing asked to shut it’s doors last year because the State contended they needed to be a licensed real estate corporation because they were acting as a broker by procuring leads. Looks like someone passed their exam at Rockwell.

Alright, maybe I’m cynical, but words have meaning. To call a flat fee broker a discount broker only soldifies the myth in real estate that there is a standard price or cost for real estate professionals’ services.

Last time I checked, that was called collusion or price fixing in the real estate industry. And that’s been highly frowned upon by the feds.
