Predict your Advertising Demographics
Microsoft has taken the wraps off an interesting Beta tool that allows you to see marketing demographic information for your site. From the info on their adCenter Labs demonstration I was able to discern the following:
Seems like my readers are mostly male.

Real estate shoppers are mostly female.

Guys seem to be hooked on "data porn".

Hmm… You think this might not be quite as scientific as it represents itself to be?

I have a random number generator that is nearly as accurate.

I should note that I did say it was a Beta - these results should be taken with a grain of salt… if you’re looking for complete demographic information you’d be better off with a real market research firm. File this site under the ‘for shits and giggles’ category.

When zillow.com launched, a reporter at our local paper insisted it proved our market was over-valued, because it came in $10,000 under on several active listings. I asked: How did it do on recent sales? Oh. Duh.
Back in the days of Big Iron, they said, “When all you’ve got is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail.” Vernor Vinge wrote the perfect retort to that notion: “Low-tech don’t mean no-tech.” The Web 2.0 paradigm is, “The whole world is a nail.” Even if you stipulate the claim, that doesn’t mean every would-be Web 2.0 app is a decent hammer.
Something less than two cents’ worth. I love the work you’re doing. Our admonition: Dinosaur is always on the lunch menu.

Joel,
Great post. Most say I read your blog every day. Okay…
This is a great tool. Yes, yes it is beta and maybe not the coolest thing since sliced bread, but heck it is fun.
It is kind of like Google Fight. It is just a tool to use and have a little fun while doing it.
This adCenter Labs tool though is pretty accurate. We ran a bit of a test with it this morning on our site emongoo and it was pretty much right. You can take a look at our blog for the results. emongoo blog It may not be the most scientific thing out there, but hey who said it was?
But like you have said and I will say again, this is a BETA site from Microsoft, nothing more. I can assure you that this was just one or two guys idea that they cranked out at a lunch break. It is all in good fun and coding. Go web 2.0!

I’m not picking a fight, but enthusiasm does not trump math. There is some truth to the idea that women will shop for houses more than men will, but if your ratio of women to men is actually 98:2, there’s something wrong with your marketing, particulary when your business model is based on selling, not buying. Whenever you get wildly anomalous results, it pays to make an appointment to see Dr. Ockham. Big disparities can exist. For example, I would expect PokerStars.com to be at least 90:10 male. But when we have already seen that the software is probably wildly wrong–with PokerStars.com predicted to be 67:33 female–rushing to its defense with what really, truly should be erroneous reporting about your own site doesn’t seem to me to defend its credibility.
One quantum level up: As a matter of curiosity, how is Microsoft able to corelate searches to searchers? Oh, yeah…

Those are good points and I don’t fight.
We know that not all the people that come to our site are female, but most of them are.
Also our business model is buying, not selling. We are a website for people to find properties. We are not realtors or anything close. Having people on the site to buy is our # 1 focus. Ofcourse we have to get inventory from people selling, but we have found that 73.4% of all listings posted on our website are posted by women.
We have found through our own marketing that the searchers on emongoo are 71.2% female and between 34 and 50.
So Microsoft’s tool isn’t perfect but hey it is a tool. It is a simple Math tool and I am sure it has it’s errors, what doesn’t? Use it, don’t use it, I am sure Bill could careless.
P.S. - this is a very active Post!

I was wondering what are the best websites to market my new house in Homestead Florida. I already put it up on craigslist, adpost and backpage.com. I even put an add on my blog! and now I am finding a few other websites that want me to pay. But my question is are any of them effective? Which ones do you recommend? Or should I stick to local newspapers for the pay adds? I am renting because I do not think that this is a good market to sell in.
