Important Milestones in Real Estate Blogging
Back in May I said it was just a matter of time before the real estate world woke up to the power of blogging and while we’re not all the way there yet, I thought it might be interesting to see just how far we’ve come.

Some milestones, as I see them:
Successful blogging community sites like ActiveRain have become wildly popular. (Yes, I’ve changed my tune – mea culpa)
Real Estate blogging evangelists like Richard Nacht and Paul Chaney published their book Realty Blogging which is currently #199,273 in Amazon.com Book Sales Rank. Not too shabby.
Community intiatives like the Carnival of Real Estate (thanks to Drew at Zillow Blog) have taken off – which it so happens, you can digest in multiple courses over at Bloodhound Blog this week.
The social news platform RealEstateVoices launched to provide bloggers and web users an interactive forum to share interesting real estate news.
Finally, industry thought leaders like Inman News have embraced blogging in a big way, which is very encouraging. Check out their next Connect Conference in Miami, which has its very own conference Blog.
More disappointing however is that not many of the big players (Hello Realogy?) have embraced the concept yet. Truliablog breaks the news that Prudential CA/NV/TX has launched an internal blog, which is a step in the right direction, but we need to see more of this.
Of course, the best part is all the new interesting voices that have emerged (Pittsburgh Homes Daily, TransparentRE, BlueRoof Blog, just to name a few). I’m looking forward to see what more arrive on the scene in the months to come.
So, are there any other milestones I’ve missed?

Thanks Joel… your post is timely – my current mission is to get as many California-based Realtors onto blogging as I can. You’ll notice my focus on educating new bloggers on transparentRE.com. I’m developing a new company Transparent Real Estate Technologies to assist Realtors free of charge and advise them of tools and services to build their business through blogging. All because I started blogging two months ago!

Thanks for the mention Joel. However, the success of the carnival is really a direct correlation to its participants- not me.

And many blogs, like Future of Real Estate Marketing, are getting much more visually appealing. It’s more enjoyable reading a blog that doesn’t look like a spreadsheet or one-sentence run together…

Are most of the real estate blogs devoted to residential real estate or are there some that look at commercial real estate as well?

Dave, there are some, but commericial is a much smaller market, and thus many fewer blogs, from what I can tell. I have recently started one in Milwaukee (http://visualizemilwaukee.blogspot.com). I keep looking for other blogs to monitor and/or link to that cover a “macro” view for commercial property. Let me know if you find any! Look for “Trump” – his name seems to get mentioned whenever anyone talks about how the large-scale commercial market is doing.

Thanks for the mention, it’s really been amazing how the face of real estate blogging has changed over the last six months. The real estate industry which is relatively slow to embrace technology and change seems to have dove right into the pool. I think the next six months will prove to be just as ground breaking.

Don’t forget realestateblogmarketing.com, the resuts the realtors are seeing are great! Great article and thanks for reporting on why blogging is important for realtors. Actually, it’s important for any online business.

The real estate market is so tech savvy that I think it is really on the forefront of web applications, social networking and blogging. I am so glad to see the industry achieving these milestones much faster than other verticals.

Ever since I read this post weeks ago, I’ve been meaning to comment. Thanks for mentioning our book. I just checked and the book is #15,897 in sales rank. I don’t know if that’s bad or good frankly, but it seems to increase each time I look. Maybe that’s evidence that real estate professionals are looking into blogging as a viable marketing medium.
