HouseAmerica First to Clone Zillow?

logo_new.gif

HouseAmerica.com claims to allow you to check your home value in any neighborhood across the United States. It doesn’t give you a specific price, like Zillow’s Zestimate, but rather a range (high/low) and average price based on, I’m assuming, the recently sold properties in the area. On my house at least, the range was in line with what Zillow came up with - I didn’t have a chance to test the site extensively, so I’d be interested to see what the results were in other parts of the country.

HouseAmerica doesn’t have Zillow’s flair (nor, I suspect, its deep pockets) and it claims that it’s not just another lead generation tool (though you can sign up for monthly reports). In any case, I don’t think this is the last Zillow knock-off we’ll be seeing.

Being a real estate agent and knowing most likely what my home will sell for, this site provided an average which was 30-40K more than what I would probably be able to sell for. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of Zillow.com.

Thats a lot better than what Zillow provided me which they underpriced my house 200K. Nonetheless, people should not rely on these sites to comp their homes. You can either call 3 agents or hire an appraiser who will give you a good idea on what your home its worth.

Also, many of these estimates don’t take many factors into consideration. For example: Pool, updated kitchen and bath, exact location of property, upgrades to the home, etc…

You will see more and more companies like this pop up. With the data becoming more available and more consistent everyday homebuyers are researching the hard facts. There is another company out of Boston called BlueTrim.com which plans to launch a toned down, easy to understand residential evaluation tool too. It should be launching soon.
