Google Getting Deeper Into Real Estate Search?

Tony Ruscoe was playing around in Google’s Sandbox, digging for new services the search engine Colossus may be working on, and came up with a reference to Google Real Estate Search. Check out a screen shot of the page. Does this mean they’re getting more serious about a dedicated real estate search tool, more than what they have in Google Base? Only speculation at this stage - but it certainly makes sense. Vertical search sites like Trulia will be watching these developments closely I bet. [via]

There’s also a rumor out there that sometime next week AOL, already a partner with Google, will announce a big Real Estate initiative. Could this Google Real Estate Search also be what AOL is about? Zillow uses Google ads, but I don’t know of any other connection. Zillow uses Pictometry pictures through MSN and I hear Zillow will soon have MSN’s 45 degree shots (like Google Earth’s). Zillow, through LendingTree, is related to IAC, Ask.com and Barry Diller, Richard Barton’s old bossman. Zillow provides the home value estimates for Yahoo!, too. If Zillow can team with AOL, it will have alliances with all 5 top search engines. Nice company if you can get it. They all crave Zillow’s 2.7 million/month click stream. Either that’s a lot of cocktail parties, or Zillow isn’t just for cocktail parties anymore.
Joel, I love your blog. Keep it coming. Good luck with the Real Estate Blog Carnival this week.

Google has been successful in most areas that they enter. I don’t think they have gotten close to Yahoo in the finance area (http://finance.yahoo.com), and I think it will take some time for them to dominate in real estate. That said, with hoards of cash behind them, Google can do anything they really want.

Google has been great in creating a search tool for real estate. Give them credit . . . They must see a need for improving a search tool that is working great.

Craiglist has slowly taken over the “for rent” market. With better search, Craigs would own real estate marketing as well.

Craigslist’s history makes for a great read. I use Kansas City Craigslist equally with the local newspaper classifieds when searching for certain items for sale. Google does a lot of things well and has a majority of the market share in search, so anything is possible on that front.
