Fix and Flipping as Entertainment

Great piece in today’s NY Times on the trend of the “property entertainment” on channels such as HGTV and A&E.

TV Land - New York Times

I’ll admit I’ve sat down and watch a few of these shows from time to time, but I don’t find them terribly entertaining. If I’m going to watch “reality” television I want it to involve a desert island or people eating bugs.

Interesting article from NY Times, I think more woman watch these shows then men. I have actually had clients do some of the things suggested on these shows that aren’t appropriate for the circumstance. I did a post on this
back in February, called “Buy me or Bite me” because of the influence the shows might have. The reruns are getting old now, they need new material.

    The view from the UK.

There have been and there continues to be a number of shows on UK TV (BBC and commercial channels) which focus on similar themes. Property ladder is all about buying, fixing and then selling a property. Grand Designs tends to focus on people who are building a home which is somehow unique (the house or just the project). There are a few shows such as Location, Location, Location that focuses on the process for finding a property given a specific set of criteria (understand there is no MLS or central database of property for sale).

The shows have been a hit for years. Definitely more so during the sustained property boom.

I started watching This Old House on PBS a couple of decades ago when I was in the US. That might be the first US series.
