Sorry Bernice, RSS is not for Lead Generation

While I agree with most of what Bernice Ross writes in her Inman News piece Web Transforms Real Estate’s Future (Read it today, before it goes subscribers only) – someone needs to explain to her what RSS is all about and what makes it an effective tool. She is seriously out to lunch on this one…

People are being inundated with information. Make your communications concise and to the point. You can use the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) software to let visitors on your Web site know that there is fresh content on your site. The RSS link also helps to build repeat organic traffic. This in turn, raises your search-engine placement. Also, be sure to tell leads how you found them. In most cases, someone visiting your Web site does not expect personal contact. When you personally contact a lead from any source, tell the lead how you obtained their contact information.

I was going to post on this as well. This is the part I didn’t follow “You can use the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) software to let visitors on your Web site know that there is fresh content on your site”

The RSS software? RSS isn’t software. With that said, I still applaud her efforts to get the word out regarding the technology. It just needs to be explained better. There is no succint way to do it. I’ve tried and I still can’t get an elevator pitch that I am happy with. We’re getting there though. At least now I can just point to the results people are getting with our product and that speaks for itself.

I definately agree that people are inundated with information. Real estate agents have to have a more personal contact with their site visitors rather than relying on their website to automate everthing.

Scary, really scary to read a quote like that from such a well-known source like Inman.

But I agree with Michael, we shouldn’t be too critical. At least traditional media, Inman News, is trying to get in the game. They just need to read and understand a little more.

We’ve all said some really uninformed things when we first got involved with this new world.

Interesting post. I had the same frustration with Bernice when she wrote on SEO techniques in June: http://www.inman.com/InmanNews.aspx?ID=52928

It’s great that she tries, but the information is so general and unhelpful.

Excellent observation. I find a lot of people can’t really understand the utility of RSS. Once Vista comes out they will be amazed at what can be done with it and those not already exploring it now will be left in the dust. I run Vista on one of my test machines and love the desktop RSS reader- it can do things no other reader can. It will transform the use of RSS among the masses by 2009.

    Whatchutalkinbout?

Bernice is just a few months ahead of her time. Soon and very soon some brilliant programmer will create a site with an easier than easy “application” for novice real estate agents to install RSS Feeds on their own websites.

What she probably meant to say was that you can use content on your website to cause your site to be “sticky.” One way to add fresh content to your site is by using RSS Feeds.

Jenna is correct. Many use RSS to take feeds and pull them into their site for pertenent content. This is probably more prevelant than people using rss feeds in their reader which is currently at about 12%. She isn’t out to lunch just did not explain it very well.
